will support an EP initiative to formally submit a proposal to the Council
for a Convention to reform the treaties for a more democratic Europe __ yes __ no The best mechanism for an open debate – and the only legal instrument for democratic reform and other necessary treaty changes – is a European Convention, as provided by Art. 48 of the EU-Treaty. It is time for an open debate on the future of Europe, and that debate should be transparent, democratic and inclusive. I will support the call for a European referendum on the results of the Convention, giving the citizens of all member states a say on the future of Europe __ yes __ no The results of the Convention should be ratified in a referendum, held in all European member states on the same day. This would, for the first time, give citizens a meaningful role in decision-making about Europe, creating a sense of belonging, ownership and of responsibility for the European project. It will be an important step toward creating a Europe of and for the citizens. I oppose the inclusion of Investor-State Dispute Settlements in TTIP and CETA __ yes __ no The EU is currently negotiating a free-trade-agreement with the USA (TTIP) and one with Canada (CETA). One contentious issue is whether the agreements should include Investor-State Dispute Settlements, which would limit the sovereign right of Parliaments to make legislation and policy where it affects the interests of corporations. Giving corporations the power to influence law and policy to this degree – and further eroding the influence of the citizens – is fundamentally undemocratic. |
